And its GOLD in the Ring! Plus the Colliers Reel.

The Gold Ring in all its seven part glory has been thoroughly played by Maleny Tunes Class last Wednesday night. If you weren't there and want to catch up, all the parts are below, with the usual instructions on how to listen to a horrid midi file of them as well!!

The other great achievement of the night was the Collier's Reel. By special request and most unusually, the dots are attached as a gif below. The versio
n is based on the playing of Joe Fitzgerald, a Clare box player from Melbourne.

Regular super-slow-paced classes are now a feature of Maleny Tunes Class, and run simultaneously with the intermediate class. There will definitely be a Slow and Supportive Class on Tunes From the Vault night (the second Wednesday of the month, this week) and on Céili Practice Night (the fourth Wednesday of the month), and there may be a slow class every week if there is the demand. The patient and encouraging Tania Owens will be teaching regularly, ensuring more and more people start to enjoy playing Irish tunes.

New Ceili Reels and Six Parts of Gold Ring.

At Ceili practice last night we put together a fab new set of reels:

Dick Gossip (D)/ St Anne's Reel (D)/ The Mason's Apron (G).

Loads of fun, especially that run up from d to g to begin the Mason's Apron.

And we visited the sixth part of the Gold Ring, which required a look at crans on D for the flute and whistle players, and rolls on B, A, and G for everyone.

Here is the Gold Ring right up to part six. Next week - the long awaited finish to this well loved epic saga....

Gold Ring gets to Part Five!

In Tunes from the Vault tonight we did manage to pull "Behind the Haystack" from the recesses of our minds, and we stood Leitrim Fancy back up on its legs too.

And we did Part Five of our epic journey through The Gold Ring.

Here is the whole tune up to part five:

Jigs from the Vault

Oh, dear, it took me all week to put up Part Four of The Gold Ring, but here it is, just in time to learn Part Five tonight!

Its Vault night, when we excavate long buried tunes under cover of darkness and fuelled by biscuits and tea. This week we are excavating a few jigs; yes, a whole night of the time signature that swings along to syllables that sound like "pineapple underpants".

We will revise Behind the Haystack (also known as Munster Buttermilk, though another jig shares that name), and probably Kalyama unless there is a request for another jig.

See you there!

The Gold Ring Project Part Three!

Nicole is back from cloudstreet's great New Zealand tour, and back into the tunes!

Last night we revisited St Anne's Reel in D, and we did the third part of The Gold Ring, which is quite an odyssey. Only four more parts to go!

Here is part one, part two and part three. As before, if you would like to hear them, copy and past the text including the header into http://www.folkinfo.org/songs/abcconvert.php, select abc2midi and click on "submit".

Jem Dunlop teaching this Wednesday!

While Nicole is away on tour in New Zealand with cloudstreet, Steve and Jem are teaching the class. This week, its Jem, the beautiful fiddle player from Witta. Don't miss this rare class!
And before Nicole went to New Zealand, we managed to get to part two of the Gold Ring. Here is part one and part two. As before, if you would like to hear them, copy and past the text including the header into http://www.folkinfo.org/songs/abcconvert.php, select abc2midi and click on "submit".

The Gold Ring Project Part One. And the Orphan.

The Tunes Class has begun an odyssey. We are learning the seven-part jig, The Gold Ring. To make each part more separate and more memorable, we are only doing one part a week. This week was the beginning of the journey, with Part One. We thought about naming each part after the colours of the rainbow (ROYGBIV, there are seven refracted wavelengths, oh shut up Nicole), or the seven Chakras, or John suggested the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and three of their wives-or-girlfriends, but in the end simplicity won.

The Gold Ring, Part One.

This is the abc notation for the first part. If you would like to hear a midi file of it (how cool is this...) copy it including the header section and paste it into this link:
http://www.folkinfo.org/songs/abcconvert.php
Select abc2midi and click on "submit". It will create a sound file so you can hear the tune. I know its old-school, but its pretty cool.

I'll put an actual recording up asap, along with a recording of the main tune we learned, The Orphan, a jig in Em.
